Community Health Council to support community wellbeing

Media Release: 28 July 2014

Compass Health is proud to announce the establishment of its Community Health Council. The Community Council is made up of individuals with expertise in community development and will contribute to community wellbeing by supporting Compass Health to better understand local health related needs and to help put in place local solutions.

Compass Health provides primary care services through 60 General Practice teams in the Wellington region and also has contracts with other health professionals in the community to help deliver quality health services. The Community Council will facilitate communication between Compass Health and the communities Compass serves enabling community voice to be integrated into these services.

Former Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast has been appointed to Chair the Council. Ms. Prendergast brings with her a wealth of experience in community representation from her career in local government and background in the health sector. Ms. Prendergast said “I’m looking forward to chairing this Council as I’ve always felt strongly about supporting communities. I see this appointment as a great opportunity to be involved in improving some of the communities’ health and wellbeing in the Wellington region.”

The Community Council membership includes two representatives each from Wellington, Kapiti, Wairarapa, and Porirua, joined by a member each from the Compass Health Māori, and Pacific Health committees.

Richard Tyler, Compass Health Board Chair, sees the Community Council as an important development for Compass Health. Richard says, “The Health Council will further strengthen working relationships with communities and enhance community input into service planning.”

Māori and Population Health General Manager for Compass, Tricia Keelan is confident that the communities Compass Health serves will significantly benefit from the high calibre of community representatives. “Representatives of this Community Council have the capability to represent their community’s perspective and effectively mobilise community resources.”
