Haoura Cornerstone Support Programme Launch

To coincide with Matariki and Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, The Hauora Cornerstone Support programme was launched at the Takapuwahia Marae on the 24th July. The people of Ngati Toa graciously opened their marae to Compass Health as they welcomed all in attendance with a traditional powhiri.

Compass Health’s vision is “Working together towards healthy and flourishing communities”. As part of achieving this vision, Compass Health developed the new Hauora Cornerstone Support Programme. The programme aims to provide a comprehensive package to support General Practices in achieving Maori and cultural responsiveness in their services.

The event was well attended by Compass Health staff, practice staff, Iwi leaders and other services. This wharenui provided a beautiful ambience as the day unfolded to the eventual launch and blessing of the programme.

Dr Larry Jordan, Porirua General Practitioner and Board Member of Compass Health, provided human context to the importance of the programme as he shared his inspirational experience with a local whānau. The theme of his story was that significant gains can only occur when whānau connect with their Iwi, language and tikānga.

The Government and the Ministry of Health have made it a key priority to reduce the health inequalities that affect Māori. Compass Health and its General Practice providers also value Māori Health as a priority.

“Our programme is designed to benefit both General Practices and whānau”, says Tricia Keelan, General Manager of Māori and Population Health at Compass Health. Tricia continues “…it provides a framework for General Practices to plan, implement and evaluate how they are working with their enrolled Māori population. The flow on effect is that Māori will experience more responsive, culturally appropriate and accessible health care”.

The occasion also marked by a seminar from Dr Pauline Harris (Rongomaiwahine and Ngāti Kahungunu). Pauline has a Ph.D. in astro-particle physics and is currently a Research Fellow at Victoria University of Wellington.
