NZ Sexual Health Society - GP STI Best Practice Guidelines

Throughout New Zealand, Sexual Health Medicine services vary and may include: the testing, treatment and management of sexually transmitted infections; genital dermatology, genital pain problems; reproductive health and sexual assault care.

Other areas of expertise may include the sexual health of adolescents, Māori, Pacific Island and other ethnic groups, sex workers, gay, lesbian and transgender individuals and prison populations. Not all sexual health clinics provide all of these services.

In Wellington, contraception services are not offered within the Sexual Health Service. Smears and contraception are provided by other practitioners such as Family Planning and local GPs.

The Wellington Sexual Health Service provides confidential:

  • Routine STI testing (No symptoms): select option 4 for reception to book an appointment
  • We now have 2 options for Sexual Health Screening:
    1. General clinic visit with a Sexual Health Nurse - this is for patients who wish to have a full history and examination and/or are known contacts of an STI
    2. Express clinic with our Health Advisor - for patients with no symptoms, who are not STI contacts and are happy to collect their own samples (simple instruction provided).  Our Health Advisor can offer the same testing as the Sexual Health Nurses, with a shorter wait time.  You complete a brief written history, and testing can be done for gonorrhoea and chlamydia.  Bloods can be taken as needed

    • Specialist physician services upon GP referral
    • Nurse advice phone line for patients experiencing STI symptoms or those needing advice
    • Sexual Health Nurse visits for testing and treatment of uncomplicated STIs: Select option 2 to speak to a nurse
    • Emergency Contraceptive Pill (ECP)
    • Sexual Assault Assessment & Treatment Service (forensic, non-forensic and referrals)
Being seen at the clinic is by appointment, and anyone may attend free of charge.

For smears and contraceptive services, please contact Family Planning NZ or your GP.

Many counselling services can be accessed by contacting Compass Health and speaking with the Primary Solutions office (eligibility criteria applies). GPs will need to make referrals directly to private services for all sex therapy needs. For assistance with contact tracing and for counselling around STI related issues, sexual health has a new health advisor position.
  • Nurse advice and triage line is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9:00am-10:30am.

The services provided by the Wellington Sexual Health Service and its outreach sites are free of charge to all individuals. Many medications are also provided free of charge. Donations are happily accepted.

Many community GPs, student health services and youth services in the Wellington, Hutt, Kapiti and Wairarapa areas are funded to provide free sexual health services (age criteria applies). These doctors and nurses attend training in sexual health provided by the specialist service and keep up to date on the diagnosis and treatment of routine STIs.

Call your GP's office or Compass Health to find a local GP who is registered to provide free primary sexual health services.

Referral Expectations

        • You can be seen by the Wellington Sexual Health Service primary care clinics without a referral from your General Practitioner (GP) - ie: routine screening, STI symptoms.
        • If you have been referred by your GP for further evaluation, we will need a letter of referral faxed to us prior to booking your appointment. This letter should contain all of your relevant history and results of their investigations.
        • The information from your referrer will enable us to ensure that you are booked with the clinician best able to address your problem.
        • We will contact you either by phone or letter to arrange your appointment once we have all of the information we need. If you do not want us to contact you by phone (or mail), please let your referring provider know the best way to reach you.
        • If you have painful symptoms and think that you need to be seen urgently, contact the clinic on Freephone 0800 188 881, between 9:00am and 10:30am Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and ask to speak to the triage nurse.
